The Games That Shall Remain Nameless

So, remember all the fun we knitters have with Ravelympics?  Ravelry--a free social networking site for knitters--has been contacted by the Office of General Counsel for the United States Olympic committee.  Details on Ravelry here.  Among other pretty obnoxious things, the letter says:

"We believe using the name 'Ravelympics' for a competition that involves an afghan marathon, scarf hockey and sweater triathlon, among others, tends to denigrate the true nature of the Olympic Games.  In a sense, it is disrespectful to our country’s finest athletes and fails to recognize or appreciate their hard work."

Well I, for one, think that such a sentence is CLEARLY disrespectful to anyone who has a hobby that he or she has tried to master.  Obviously, we do denigrate the true nature of the games as this person sees them--ours have been about fun and teamwork, and NOT about raking in the greatest number of sponsorships.

Count this as one VERY angry knitter who will never watch, mention, or buy anything in ANY way connected with the United States Olympic committee.  JERKS.

OMG! I am shocked. Not only is the Olympic committee insulting knitters, but they are also insulting anyone who has ever has a party or anything else celebrating the olympics for fun.

I won't be watching the Olympics this year. Too bad - I'd planned to. But I won't be, not now. Nor will I be supporting those companies which choose to advertise with the Olympics. Not that I don't support our athletes ... but purchasing from those companies supports the USOC .. and *THAT* I will NOT support. Ever again. I'll spend my money on yarn & needles, instead.

What a bunch of sanctimonious asshats! They've really picked the wrong group to attack. A boycott of their sponsors and events by even half of the 1 in 3 people who are reputed to knit (not even counting crocheters or spinners) would significantly hit their bottom line. And cost them the repeated mention of the games on all of the participants' blogs and twitter feeds and FB pages of the people who would have participated, rather than giving them the free advertising they could have enjoyed. Truly shortsighted and, well, full of stupidity.

Sorry for the redundancy in previous comment... and the repetitiveness. ;-)
