Alas! There Has Been No Knitting Today....

.....but there is a garden plot almost ready for the garlic and there's freshly baked zucchini bread.  I know--it doesn't help me much with the Double Dog Dare challenge, but on the other hand, knitting NEVER makes the house smell this good.

Y'know, I like zucchini bread just fine. But ever since the summer of eighty-gazillion zucchini (I think I was about 15), I've been reluctant to attempt it. Toward the end, zucchini bread was the only zucchini thing we could still face eating. My mother, driven to wits end by the vast and unstoppable onslaught of zucchini resorted to ever more creative attempts at serving it.

It culminated in the unforgettable late August zucchini lasagna incident (wherein the pasta was replaced with zucchini) and the family revolted. My father (ordinarily an enthusiastic trencherman) actually abandoned his portion for a PB&J sandwich. I finished mine, but uncharacteristically refused seconds. My sister was found whimpering in her closet the next day. My mother finally relented and the next several weeks saw the implementation of covert drive-by zucchini-ings of the general neighborhood.

It wasn't the end, though, because various zucchini and zucchini hybrids appeared uninvited in the garden and compost for the next several years. (Just talking about it makes me see long dark green shadows out of the corner of my eye. *shudders*)
