Here's A Little Tip For You

Quilting with a striped fabric might be the fast lane to the funny farm.

Yesterday I picked up the blocks off the guest bed and put them on a shelf in the sewing room. I don't know what possessed me--it isn't like cleaning is one of my great joys in life. Today when I got it back out to see how the two new blocks fit in, I discovered that everything depends on HOW the blocks are laid out--like which one starts what row & everything. NOW I have to figure out how I had it laid out before I picked it up because I started 3 of the same block that theoretically might finish the darn thing....
so one of us is in need of a "time out." And a drink.

Most of today was spent out in the sunshine planting things, but I did get a few rows in on this
which looks like a new project, I realize, but it really isn't. I started this last month on the trip to McCall, but had so little done that it was too embarrassing to photograph. It's a shawl my mother picked out as her retirement gift, and she's been retired 11 months now, so I thought it time to kick things in to a slightly higher gear.

And, of course, get away from the quilt.....

However exasperating it might seem, the quilt is really looking good.
The shawl design looks interesting. I look forward to seeing more of this as it grows.

Fortunately, you have photographs of how it was laid out before, which should help (theoretically, anyway!)

You should try lining up small blue polka dots! I think there was a lot of drinking during that one!!!

It seems to me that there are only four different possibilities of how your quilt could be laid out (given a consistent number of rows and columns), all dictated by the orientation of the very first block in the upper left hand corner. Furthermore, they are somewhat equivalent, because you can just take away the top row and rearrange the blocks from it on the bottom row and/or take the left column and rearrange the blocks on the right side. In this way, you can try all four possibilities without rearranging the majority of the blocks. That way, you can either replicate your original layout by starting in the top left hand corner with the piece that points southeast, or you can see if the blocks you have work better in a different configuration. To get from your current configuration to your previous one, all you need to do is to take off the top row and place it elsewhere.
